Skyjacker people are on Kickstarter for the third time looking for funds to help complete their space combat game as fast as possible. This time the strategy is a bit different. Instead of promising the full game right away they propose Starship Constructor, an intermediate step, or, in the devs own words: “a milestone in SKYJACKER development and a stand-alone application”. ~Digitilus
So, the idea now is not to go with all the space combat experience at first, but to offer this kind of mini-game that allows you to explore and play with hundred of spaceship designs from eight alien civilizations. Assemble and disassemble these ships seems to be the idea. They intend to release the app for PC, Mac and Linux, but also consider iOS and Android versions (and OUYA). They also have some extensions planned for this standalone app, like arcade gameplay and mod tools, but that’s part of the stretch goals.
They seem to be well on their way to deliver Skyjacker – the main project – sometime in the near future with self funding. But, now, they ask for at least $30,000 to develop this construction mini-game, that from what I understood will help them speed up the main project, the Skyjacker game itself, which is a different package. If they succeed, they estimate an ETA for the Skyjacker main game on August 2013.
Will they make it at their third attempt? At the time of this writing, they have 2.5 days to reach their goal with 87% of their funding objective reached. So, there’s a good chance that they might succeed. Anyhow, The team seems driven and motivated. The impression I got from reading and watching all the kickstarter content, is that they will make Skyjacker a reality one way or the other. Of course, they prefer to have it ready sooner.

Their ships looks really great. I wish they had gotten a native English speaker to do their video though. I get that they are russian, that’s great. But their cadence when they speak english is a little off; the emphasis is incorrect throughout single words and throughout sentences. And so the bottom line is that it is less effective at communicating to native english speakers. Which, when you want them to give you money, is not so great.
Hope they make it. Seems like they could.
Yes, I also think the communication difficulty hinders their cause. They should hire an English speaker representative for next ventures of this kind. It looks like they can make it … but recently the pledges have not increase much.
I also think their strategy/pitch could have been made more clear. It’s a bit hard to understand exactly what it is all about and what you get, unless you read and watch everything they have on that kickstarter page. Future kickstarters should have that in mind. Keep it clear and simple. And, above all, explain better the “Why”.
Adam Solo: “And, above all, explain better the “Why”.”
Amen to that – I supported their first 2 Kickstarters and then pre-ordered through their website when they decided to “go independent”. I can see no reason for pre-orderers to support this KS in addition, so it seems as if they have cannibalised their support base. That may explain why this KS has been much slower in gaining support.
I backed this project thinking I would get my hands on the full game anytime soon, I hope I won´t de disappointed. Oh, and it succeeded on Kickstarter.
It was a very confusing KS campaign, to say the least. I did my best to explain what their plans were. “Instead of promising the full game right away they propose Starship Constructor, an intermediate step …”. But I guess you backed before reading this :)
