Rev3Games managed to put together Julian Gollop, co-author of X-COM: UFO Defense (aka UFO: Enemy Unknown) and Jake Solomon, lead designer of XCOM: Enemy Unknown to discuss X-COM and turn-based strategy gaming in general. In the line of our last post about Gollop’s presentation at GDC, this 17m long video is also pure delight to X-COM fans. The designers exchange opinions about both the original game and the new game in a friendly and relaxed way. Well, at least Julian seems relaxed :), Jake is very nervous in the beginning. But, who wouldn’t?
They also discuss turn-based strategy gaming in general. How the genre reached its pinnacle in the mid-90’s, with games like X-COM, Master of Orion, Master of Magic and others, and how these type of games were put in the backseat to real-time strategy games. A must see to X-COM fans and turn-based strategy gamers in general. Huge thank you to Rev3Games for finding a way to put these two gentlemen together.

I was half expecting them to kiss. =)
I had to laugh…they open by saying that Julian Gollop “worked” on the original X-Com. Sort of like saying a mom “worked” on her newborn infant.
Great video, really enjoyed it. I hope the X-com franchise will go on sort of like Civ has with add-ons, new versions, etc.
TOTALLY…Off-topic, totally!! Star Trek: Into Darkness (and I picked a thread that practically no one is commenting on so as to not hijack things)
Star Trek: Into Darkness
So, if you don’t give a fat rat’s ass about Star Trek, just ignore this.
I’ve been on this ‘info seeking crusade’ for the past 4 weeks to learn about the new movie. My wife thinks I’m certifiably bonkos for spending so much time mucking around the net looking for info, I’m sure she is ready to commit me to the loonie bin, BUT…I will share the MOST interesting find I’ve come across so far. Two guys who do regular podcasts about what they’ve learned have shared a boat load of spoilers. Apparently they have contacts with some mates in Syndey, where the movie has already premiered, and they spilled the beans on some things. The film has also premiered in Berlin and tonight in London. Maybe more bloggers will spill their guts tonight or tomorrow. Anyway, here is the podcast and it begins around 31:10 if you are even remotely interested. Just sharing…

You should have used the forum to share this sly. As you say, this is totally off-topic.
