Wing Commander Saga: The Darkest Dawn is a fan project inspired in the Wing Commander games series, therefore it is a space simulation game. Origin Systems and EA hold the rights to the original Wing Commander games and don’t seem to be affiliated with WCS in any way, so, WCS cannot be commercialized. The game was 10 years in development and got released today, for free. WCS uses the Freespace 2′ open source engine at its core. Today the WCS devs have announced the release of the PC version. The Linux and Mac versions will be available soon – “we just need to port the launcher to OSX and Linux and run some tests” ~WCS Dev Team.

10 years in the making, wow just wow :]
Apparently there has been good reception. Looks like the 10 years were well used :) Pity that they can’t monetize their efforts though, due to IP rights.
